Regular Monthly Meeting
Subject: Monitoring Children's Internet Use.
Guest speaker Sandy Monsilovich answered many questions that parents
are asking, including: "How can I be sure my child is making productive
use of his time on the Internet?"
Sandy is an Instructional Technology Specialist at the Indiana Area
School District and explained how the schools monitor the students' web
surfing. The district computer labs have the capability to monitor and
log the sites that are accessed from each terminal, and by requiring students
to log on with a password, they know which students may have visited inappropriate
sites. The District policy is to encourage responsible use of the Internet,
and to make clear that (just as in the work world) sanctions can be levied
against students who abuse the privilege.
Sandy's handouts included lists and printouts of web sites that are
regarded as being appropriate for children and families.
