Tuesday,
April 20, 2004:
The Indiana PC Users Group held its monthly meeting at the Indiana
County Technology Center, Hamill Road, Indiana, Pa. Publicity Chairman
Chauncey Ross welcomed those in attendance and opened the meeting at 7:15
p.m. in the absence of President Larry Rodack and Vice President Lloyd
Onyett.
Minutes:
The minutes of the March 16 meeting were approved as presented.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Larry Stadtmiller reported the club checking account
balance is $754.64. His report was approved as presented.
Program:
Program Chairman Steve Higgins introduced the group to several Web
sites and addressed various issues in the course of the discussion.
Steve discussed the Novell security system in place to limit access
to certain sites by students at Indiana County Technology Center. He
mentioned Border Manager and Cyber Patrol, other web-restrictive software
products. Steve downloaded the newest version of WinZip (www.winzip.com)
and used it to decompress files of drivers downloaded earlier from the
FujiFilm site. The drivers were downloaded for use in the SCM Microsystems
USB reader.
In a follow-up to a
discussion at a previous meeting, Steve demonstrated how to edit tags on
music files, especially those made from vinyl records and other analog
sources. Steve advised group members to carefully record
locations of installed files, particularly drivers.
In a discussion of popular search
engines, those available at Google, Dogpile, HotBot, InfoSeek, Mamma.com and
Teoma were mentioned and visited online. Steve described MSG TAG as a fancy
receipt program used for attaching tags to email messages. MSG TAG sends
notification to a sender when a message is received and viewed.
Steve also discussed Share Outlook, from 4team.biz, a program that
enables sharing and synchronizing of Outlook folders among multiple users.
Web sites www.thescreensavers.com and techtv.com were visited to find
information about The Geek Show (dark tips, program recaps) and Sarah’s
Downloads for registry-editing software.
Steve also discussed transferring
data between computers using Windows’ Neighborhood Network. While ICPCUG
members sometimes share their e-mail addresses with others on an individual
basis, they have no established means of reaching the membership at large to
ask questions or discuss issues of general interest.
Old / New Business:
No matters of old or new business were discussed.
Open Forum:
In a combination of the Program discussion and Open Forum
question-and-answer period, Steve discussed sharing data on PDAs using
laser; solicited someone with expertise on eBay to present a program at a
future meeting; and demonstrated Proxomitron, a software program that halts
pop-ups, bouncing ads, and banner ads. He also said Microsoft Network (www.msn.net)
has a pop-up blocker program available for download. Steve
said users may restore original settings to “hijacked” browsers using
Restore and Adobe’s GoBack. In conclusion, Steve mentioned drudgereport.com.
The next meeting will be held
Tuesday, May 18, 2004. There being no other business, the meeting was
adjourned at 8:54 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Robert
