Program:

²      Jane Urgman, at teacher at the Indiana Vocational Center was the program presenter this evening speaking on databases.  She has created databases for several clients and is also well versed in web design.

²      Databases are used as a way to manage information.

²      They came into play during the 1970s.

²      A file cabinet is a type of database.

²      It is very time consuming to create and maintain a database.

²      Databases are structured with records and fields.  An example is a phone book where records are individuals and fields consist of all the names, numbers and addresses.

²      A form can be created which is essentially a means to talk or get information into the database.

²      A lot of up front time must be done in thinking about how to set up a database.

²      Before creating one you should talk to the people who are going to use it.

²      Each table needs a unique field.  An example would be and address book with birthdates.

²      Need to store info in a logical order.  And need an I.D. incase there are more than one record with the same name.  Example – two people with the same names.

²      After creating a database you should analyze the data to reduce duplicate entries over two tables.  Each table should hold unique information.

²      You can use a “query” to filter data.

²      You can create a "switchboard" where one go to run either built in queries, forms or reports.

²      Outlook's address book and Quicken are a databases.

²      FrontPage creates a lot of garbage code up front therefore search engines will skip this page.

²      Dream Weaver updates only changes made where FrontPage will save everything.

²      Search engines look at; domain names then title bar then meta tags (only some engines) then text in page.

²      Google searches every computer worldwide in less than a month.

Old/New Business:
No matters of old business were discussed.  Linda asked for a volunteer to teach computer basics at Aging Services while she was away.  Pat Wood volunteered to help.

Open Forum:
No issues were discussed.

The next meeting of the ICPCUG will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 7:00 pm.  There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert Dalecki, Secretary
