Everyone Welcome

Tuesday, April 19, 2005:
The Indiana PC Users Group held its monthly meeting at the Indiana County Technology Center, Hamill Road, Indiana, PA.  President Larry Rodack opened the meeting at 7:20 P.M.

Secretary and Treasurer Reports:
The March 15, 2005 minutes was emailed to all members the previous evening as presented by Bob Dalecki.  It was accepted by the members.  The treasurer's report was not presented.  The Treasurer was not able to attend the meeting but did send the report via email to Pres. Larry Rodack – we have a balance in the account as of 4/19/05 of $708.64.

Program:
Steve Higgins presented a short over view of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP).  This is a method of talking over the internet.  You can purchase this service at a cost of between $7.95 to $29.95.  A broadband access point of 512 kps is needed.  These VOIP providers include with their service many features that cost extra with conventional phone companies.  The provider will send a box that works in a similar manner as a modem.  You can call anyone who has a phone, the recipient doesn’t have to have the same system as you.  Also, you don’t have to have the computer on for it to work.  You do need a router.  Acoustics are suppose to be better than the older system.  You can  take the box with you when traveling and it is like being at home.  www.geekgazette.com  list and rates many providers of this service.

Steve also presented a short over view of www.we-blocker.com.  This is a free filter websites that can block all sited except whatever you pick.  Many schools are currently using cyber-patrol.

Larry Rodack presented an overview of a program that he has been using for almost two years to track his papers.  www.thepapertiger.com has a powerful program to track all your papers as to their location.  A great tutorial is available from the website.  You can setup all your cabinets files in advance by using generic names such as archive 1.  There is no need to make folders based on the subject name.  Many companies are using this system.  They have a home and a downloadable trial version available.  They recommend having different file cabinets, drawers and folders setup in advance and direct you as to how to clean up your current files.  They have monthly conferences where new users can get help and tips.  The cost is $60 for a basic system and $200 for a business version with multiple user capabilities.

Old/New Business:
Jim Crissman presented a motion for advertising our club in the Indiana County Tourist Bureau information magazine which is distributed around bulletin boards in Indiana County area at a cost of $35 annually.  This would give our club added exposure.  A motion was made to spend $35 for the advertising and it was seconded.  The motion was passed by the members.

Open Forum:
It was mentioned that everyone should have a router as a physical firewall and also some sort of software firewall protection.
If you create a domain with an email account then if you change your ISP your email will not change.

The next meeting of the ICPCUG will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 7:00 pm.  There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert Dalecki, Secretary
