Tuesday, January 15, 2005:

The Indiana PC Users Group held its monthly meeting at the Indiana County Technology Center, Hamill Road, Indiana, PA.  Program Director Steve Higgins opened the meeting at 7:10 P.M.

Treasury & Minutes Report:
Treasurer Larry Stadtmiller and Secretary Bob Dalecki reported their reports which were accepted by the members.

Program:
Jennifer Forrest owner and operator of Small Town Life Magazine presented the evening program on the powerful publishing program “Quark Express”.

This software cost about $850 for the newest version 6.0 and may cost about $400 for the older version 4.0.

Her first issue, which was published in May of 2000, took 3 months to learn and layout.

Jennifer demonstrated the software by creating an example of tri-fold brochure:

  • Grab text box to cover entire page then use toolbar to set 3 columns
  • Can turn off guide lines to see how it will appear,
  • Create boxes into which text and photos can be inserted.
  • Cntr+Alt+Shift to enlarge or shrink a photo
  • Can edit photo by cutting out 'bites' of photo with oval shapes
  • One button toolbar can manipulate images quickly.
  • Program doesn't "over think" what you are doing as in MS Word.
  • Can change CMYK (for commercial printing) colors (RGB for home use) create 'my blue' works on black and white images only go to item->Modify->and select from 4 tab dialog box.

Mac and PC platforms are both available - graphics people prefer using a MAC and writers prefer a PC.

Many free lancers will work for Jennifer at no charge in exchange to learn this program (can then put on resume).

The program has a spelling and grammar checker.

You can view the many pages created in thumbnail mode.

Jennifer has magazine subscriptions in 30 states and 2 foreign countries.  She charges $30 for 12 bi-monthly issues which covers 2 years.

Her web address is www.smalltownlifemagazine.com and mailing address is 2277 Philadelphia St, Indiana, PA.  15701.Her phone number is (724) 349-7366.

Most of her magazines go into hospitals and are uplifting in nature.

Microsoft has a new beta spyware killer which seems to be adequate.

The Ad-aware priced version works well in eliminating add ware.

Email can be archived with available programs found on the net.

You can move you email messages by going to Tools->  option-> maintenance

The next meeting of the ICPCUG will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2005.  There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert Dalecki, Secretary
