Program
Steve Higgins conducted a lesson on Web 2.0. He handed out some information
and conducted a Powerpoint presentation.
Hypertext is the way
that one can “jump” from one page to another. With the Web 1.0 format you
would save a page and return to it when wanted.
Web 2.0 enables you
to become part of a group where you can subscribe to a particular newsgroup.
This newsgroup can provide information about a subject of which may be of
interest to you.
You can then add
results to a “Blog” a personal journal in free form. Programs to post Blogs
can be found at
www.typepad.com (subscription fee
required) and
www.blogger.com (free).
Your Blogs will be
picked up and categorized by
www.technorati.com within a few hours. Rating is based on the number of
links in you Blog.
www.del.icio.us will post your bookmarks. This enables users to
connect people to people and data to data.
There are also yahoo
groups which can search for groups (must be invited to join).
Old
& New Business
A lively discussion about the direction and future of the ICPCUG developed.
Larry Stadtmiller started the discussion with his thought that people from
many various businesses should be attending the meetings. Chauncey Ross
mentioned that during the first few years of the group’s existence
approximately 10% of homes had a computer and the need to learn about PCs
was large. Now approximately 90% of homes have computers and the perceived
need is much smaller. Bob Dalecki mentioned that most people who use
computers don’t use them efficiently but aren’t aware that there are better
ways of using their computer. He mentioned that we might want to target
these people to join our meetings. Patti expressed a concern over the
group’s name, Indiana County PC Users Group. She mentioned that most people
don’t know what ICPCUG stands for and those that do think is stands for a
group of people who are “into” computers (geeks). She mentioned that we may
want to consider changing our name to convey a different meaning.
Close
The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2005.
With no other business to conduct, Darlene Graham adjourned the meeting at
8:50 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted,
Robert
Dalecki, Secretary
