President Chauncey
Ross convened the monthly meeting of the Indiana County PC Users Group at
7:09 p.m. at the Indiana County Technology Center, Hamill Road, Indiana,
Pa.
Treasurer’s
Report
The treasurer’s report reflecting a checking-account balance of $667.75 as
of this date was presented and approved on a motion by Donna McConnell,
seconded by Ron McConnell.
Program
Program Director Steve Higgins of Sassafras Forge distributed handouts
identifying “five steps to protecting your system.” His recommendations for
preserving critical data are 1) Security step one is a full backup; 2) Back
up your software; 3) Make an emergency disk; 4) Defrag your hard drive; and
5) Block the bad guys.
The most important
data to back up are files created by the user, downloads, music, photos and
any content not purchased from a dealer.
Higgins described the
steps for backing up data using Microsoft Windows XP and for preserving
e-mail using popular e-mail programs.
Higgins further
recommended that business operators should keep copies of data off site, use
hard disk drives for long-term data storage and CD-ROMs and CD-RWs for
day-to-day backups.
Further discussion in
the program involved the advantages of keeping an operating system and
program files on the same disk drive, integrity of hard disk drives,
hard-drive imaging, booting to safe mode and adjusting a system BIOS.
Old
business, new business
Chauncey Ross briefly discussed an experience with a Sony ICD-P210 digital
voice recorder and Audacity audio-editing software. Jim Crissman related a
positive shopping experience at Staples.
Close
The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2006. With no
other business to conduct, President Ross adjourned the meeting on a motion
by Donna McConnell at 9:04 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted,
Chauncey
Ross, president
